Summer is coming so Ryan and I ventured to Lowe's to buy a couple of plants. We're not "green thumb" kind of people but I thought our porch needed a little plant life.
The first year we lived in our house we bought 2 ferns and hung them on the porch. We ended up having more birds nest then I could handle. Every morning when I would come out of the house, the Momma bird would scare me to death as she sped off from the nest as quickly as possible. Now don't get me wrong, I loved watching the babies grow over time but I had heard these scary stories..."Don't touch or bother the babies or the Momma bird will not come back." Do you know how much stress that is on me? I couldn't imagine being the reason that the Momma just gave up and moved on.
Here is the progression of our little friends back in 2008:

So there ya have it. That was just one nest's progression. We had several that summer in both ferns. It was fun to watch but I would be ok if they didn't find a home there this summer. :) And did I fail to mention there was so much bird poop on our porch and porch railings that summer, too? Awesome.
So this year we decided to try a new plant on our 2 hooks on the front porch. Off to Lowe's we went and we looked around... I thought the hanging baskets were really pretty but couldn't see us spending $25 on each so we kept looking. Then we saw something really pretty hanging on one of the rods. I asked Ryan what he thought and he thought they were really cool looking, so did I. So we walked out with 2 "Wandering Jew" plants. We have no idea how to care for them but we figured we would give them a shot. They look like this (these aren't ours):
After selecting those we got some potting soil and chose some Lily Asiatic flowers for the front porch planters (to start!) and we were on our way. Lets hope all of our plants last atleast a couple weeks before we kill them or our big, friendly, black, neighbor dog eats them! :) He didn't eat our Christmas trees we had out this past December so we have faith in 'ol Henry!

Woo hoo! Please refrain from any negative commentary. As I said, we are no where close to being gardeners or landscapers. My husband plays with wood and I play with money! Ahhh, wish us luck! We will let ya know how it goes.
I think y'all did good!! R and I have a lily planter on our front porch. If you ever want landscaping advice, you should talk to my hubby. He's been very busy creating landscape designs and then doing all of the planting. He has worked under one of the top designers on the East Coast so he's picked up a lot of landscaping knowledge over 10+ years. (I'll take some updated pictures of our new landscaping that he's been busy with and email them to ya. He still wants to add a few plants, but it's 98% finished)
ReplyDeleteWe had bird issues with our two ferns last year so we opted out of hanging ferns this year and R planted some ground ferns below our Japanese Maple Tree. However, we are battling nests in our new Hibiscus tree..and our old charcoal grill!
Nothing to do with your post...but I want a front walkway like yours!
ReplyDeleteAnyway, those wandering Jews are super plants and you can root them and they will grow very easy in another pot indoors. :)
